一、 Drinking Water Quality Standards

Drinking water quality standards are established to ensure the safety and health of consumers. These standards cover various aspects such as physical, chemical, and biological properties. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a set of guidelines for drinking-water quality that includes parameters such as pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), and bacterial contaminants.

Physical properties refer to the characteristics of water that can be observed with the naked eye or through simple tests. For instance, pH is a measure of acidity or alkalinity on a scale from 0 to 14. A pH level between 6.5 and 8.5 is considered safe for consumption. Turbidity measures the clarity of water by quantifying suspended particles in milliliters per liter (mL/L). Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) represents all substances present in solution within the water.

Chemical properties involve testing for harmful substances like heavy metals, nitrates, fluoride levels, etc., which could have adverse effects on human health if consumed excessively or inadequately over time. Heavy metals like lead are toxic even at trace amounts; hence it's crucial to monitor their presence below detectable limits (<0 mg/L).

Biological properties encompass testing for microbial contaminants like bacteria, viruses & parasites which pose significant risks to public health when ingested through contaminated drinking water sources.

Regular monitoring and maintenance are critical components in maintaining good drinking water quality standards. This involves continuous sampling from different points throughout the distribution network followed by laboratory analysis using standardized methods against specific criteria outlined in regulatory guidelines.
